About the job

iOS Developer – Hardware, Video, Connectivity & Tactical Systems
About the Role
Pixels On Target is looking for a motivated iOS Developer to join our mobile engineering team. In this role, you will help build and maintain iOS applications that interface with advanced thermal optics and field-deployed hardware systems.
You will work on mobile software involving USB/UVC video workflows, USB device communication, Bluetooth connectivity, AWS-backed services, and TAK ecosystem integration. This is an opportunity to contribute to mission-focused technology that improves field performance, situational awareness, and real-time device interaction.
Note: This position requires a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident / Green Card holder.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and maintain iOS applications that connect with thermal imaging devices and related hardware platforms.
Implement features involving live video streaming, UVC-compatible video handling, image capture, device control, and settings configuration.
Build and support USB-based communication workflows, including accessory discovery, command/control messaging, firmware interaction, and data transfer where applicable.
Develop Bluetooth-based features using Core Bluetooth, including device pairing, telemetry, configuration, diagnostics, and status monitoring.
Integrate mobile applications with AWS services, including REST APIs, authentication, cloud storage, telemetry upload, device data synchronization, and secure backend communication.
Collaborate closely with embedded engineers, hardware teams, UI/UX designers, product managers, and QA to deliver reliable hardware-integrated mobile experiences.
Support performance optimization for video, connectivity, background tasks, battery usage, and real-time device interaction.
Assist with testing, debugging, and troubleshooting across iPhone and iPad hardware, including field-oriented use cases.
Contribute to TAK-related integrations, including situational awareness workflows, tactical data exchange, map overlays, device location, and interoperability with TAK/iTAK/ATAK environments where applicable.
Participate in code reviews, architecture discussions, documentation, and continuous improvement of the iOS codebase.
Requirements
3+ years of iOS application development experience.
Proficiency with Swift and familiarity with UIKit and/or SwiftUI.
Strong understanding of the iOS application lifecycle, background execution, permissions, networking, and mobile UI development.
Familiarity with hardware communication concepts, especially one or more of the following: USB, UVC, Bluetooth, serial-style command protocols, or accessory communication.
Experience working with REST APIs, JSON, authentication flows, and mobile-to-cloud communication.
Familiarity with Core Bluetooth or a strong interest in learning Bluetooth device integration.
Experience using Git for version control.
Strong debugging, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Ability to work closely with hardware, embedded, and backend teams in a hands-on engineering environment.
Willingness to learn specialized technologies used in tactical, defense, or field-deployed mobile applications.
Preferred Qualifications
Projects involving iOS-to-hardware integration, especially over USB or Bluetooth.
Experience building apps that require reliable field performance, offline behavior, ruggedized workflows, or real-time situational awareness.
Understanding of video capture, video rendering, frame processing, streaming protocols, or device control interfaces.
Interest in defense technology, tactical systems, thermal imaging, geospatial applications, and mission-driven product development.
Ability to troubleshoot across software, hardware, cables, firmware, mobile OS behavior, and network/cloud services.
Bonus / Plus
Experience with MFi / iAP2 External Accessory development.
Experience with USB-C accessory communication on iPhone or iPad.
Experience with UVC video devices, AVFoundation, camera pipelines, video streaming, image processing, or low-latency video display.
Experience integrating with AWS services such as API Gateway, Lambda, Cognito, S3, IoT Core, DynamoDB, or CloudWatch.
Experience with TAK, iTAK, ATAK, CoT messaging, tactical mapping, geospatial data, or military-grade situational awareness tools.
Knowledge of secure communication patterns, encryption, authentication, certificates, or device provisioning.
Experience with hardware-integrated applications, embedded systems, thermal imaging, optics, sensors, drones, radios, or tactical field equipment.
Familiarity with MVVM, Combine, async/await, dependency injection, or other modern iOS architecture patterns.
GitHub, App Store apps, or portfolio projects demonstrating iOS, hardware, video, or connectivity work.
